€749 thousand funding for major local sports project in East Galway - Dolan

Almost three quarters of a million euro in funding has been allocated to a large scale sports project in East Galway according to Councillor Aisling Dolan, Fine Gael election candidate for Roscommon- Galway. The funding is included in the the first set of allocations under the new Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) announced by Shane Ross T.D., Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, and Brendan Griffin T.D. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport. €749,312 is being allocated towards East Galway Sports Campus in New Inn. It will go towards providing a full size astro turf pitch, Multi Use Games Area (MUGA) for volleyball, tennis, underage soccer, multipurpose training area, ball wall for handball, racket ball and hurling practice, basketball court, bocce playing area, new dressing rooms, new car parking and general landscaping. Councillor Dolan says “I'm delighted to see this money allocated as it will mark a significant improvement to our community. Sport has the capacity to knit communities together and it is important that we continue to invest in sport at a local level. This major project is among the first to be funded under this new model and I am delighted to see that the East Galway region will benefit.” While the Government is investing €77million in projects across the country, the full cost of all projects will be in the region of €221m. This announcement relates to projects that applied for funding for construction of facilities, a further announcement will be made in the near future in respect of Stream 1 applications. These applications were for grants towards the cost of developing projects to the point that an application for delivery phase funding can be submitted in the future.
