How to support Portiuncula University Hospital & Medical Academy?

As Senator for Roscommon-Galway, I support the excellent teams at Portiuncula University Hospital & Medical Academy to make sure the new 50 bed unit comes to fruition and work commences. I will work with the management team at Portiuncula and the Saolta University Health Care Group to ensure our healthcare community are at the forefront of innovation, research and training.

Health is a such an important priority – how do we build an active and healthy community?

I support the development of local health centres and where we can provide technical supports to GPs to help with increased workloads. I work with the HSE’s Sláintecare plan to provide more community services particularly in the area of Mental Health and reduce the necessity to access Emergency Departments.

In 5 years Roscommon/Galway will have one of the highest numbers of 65+ – how do we plan for this?

In my previous role working in healthcare I saw the innovations and the future technologies that can support independent living. As a Fine Gael Senator for Roscommon-Galway, I work to ensure support for start-ups and entrepreneurs providing increased access to home help and also to look to solutions such as telemedicine where possible to reduce the need for waiting at hospitals. I support initiatives providing community supports such as home help, neighbourhood watch, accessible transport, and technologies such as telemedicine
